Personally, I quite like the Alice in Wonderland monologue, I used this monologue earlier this year (in a show where I got a lead might I add lol) It’s probably one of my favorite monologues. For songs, look into the songs “Pulled” from The Addams Family and “Cain’t Say No” from Oklahoma! Both are uptempo, cheerful and comedic songs that would be a blast to learn and sing for an audition. They’re in easy ranges, but if you want to belt more go for Cain’t Say No, but if you want to go in and out of belting, Pulled is a perfect option.

As for the comedic monologues, choose one of the monologues from the musical “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”…Lucy’s monologues and Sally’s monologue are hysterical to watch and read. Break a leg and keep rocking the stage!

Lately I haven't gotten cast into any theatre productions on and around my campus and I really want to improve my acting but I cannot if I don't get any experience. Help?? Advice???

A hint of advice-don’t try out for all shows like that! Do community theatre for experience. Everyone has to get in those, and sure you have to pay to be in them to cover the costume costs and whatnot, but it is the best way to get experience. You can build close-knit friendships with everyone and you still get to put on a lot of wonderful shows. Community theatre is the way to go! Keep rocking the stage :)

hey! how's life?? so i was just wondering if oyu had any specific tips for crying on stage-like actual crying-i cant use chemicals my director wants me to and i'd like to even though it is a stage show and people probably wont see it but i think it'll better my performance and we're in a competition so i'd like to do as well as possible everyone says just picture sad things but i was wondering if you had any other tips oh the show is godspell and im peggy and he wants me to cry during by my side

That’s just it. Picture sad things. If you can’t really picture sad things, imagine someone yelling at you or something. It’s very upsetting and it’s hard to think about, but it helps. My one friend had to cry in a scene, and he said he had to imagine his dad beating him. Which is absolutely horrific, but it got him to start crying. If you don’t want to go that route, maybe try something that’s really happy that would make you cry out of joy. You are a theatre kid, and I’m sure you have imagination to do that. Keep rocking the stage and break a leg in Godspell!

Are there any good roles for lyric sopranos in musical theatre? (not opera.) It seems that roles are only written for ballsy mezzos in theatre :( I'm trained operatically so I can't sing anything in my chest voice and it sucks lol.

Of course there are good roles for sopranos! I don’t know how your Lyric Soprano voice sounds, but here are some amazing high soprano roles: Cosette in Les Miserables (look up “A Heart Full of Love”), Joanna from Sweeney Todd (look up “Green Finch and Linnet Bird”), Abagail from 1776 (look up “Yours, Yours, Yours”), Maria from West Side Story (look up “Tonight”), and Marian Paroo from The Music Man (look up “Til There was You”) and those are just a few that i can think of off the top of my head!

For an upbeat alto-ish song try “Brand New You” from the musical 13! Hopefully you can find sheet music for it! I’d suggest the beginning of the song where it’s very fun and shows a lot of personality without going very high. Break your leg at auditions and keep rocking the stage!!

So my friend and I got chorus in the school play with no speaking parts, and I was fine with it (I starred in the last show, you can't be a lead all the time, right?) But he's really upset. Aw. I’m very sorry, it sucks not getting the lead. BUT GURL I LIKE YO ATTITUDE! With your friend though, that’s too bad. Do normal things that you would do anyway. Tell him he’s amazing and you think that fate does what it means to do and sometimes that means you won’t get a big role this year, but you will some other time. That it might not have been his talent, but his height or vocal part or something, you know? Something that can’t change. Tell him all the fun you’ll have in chorus because it’s less work and still lots of fun! Remind him he doesn’t have to worry about line memorization or anything! And then proceed to call one of the people who got a lead a favorite, that always helps get some sad feeling out. Just be what you are - a friend to him, and that’s going to help you comfort him.

Hi! Cute blog :) & can I ask for some advice? Okay, I was in Legally Blonde: The Musical at my local theatre. It was my first musical and I was cast as "Kate", and I played a few other ensemble roles. I am currently a freshman at high school and this year's spring musical is Bye Bye Birdie. I want to audition for Ursula or maybe a different principal ensemble role. I am a soprano. Any ideas for an audition song? (Can't be from Grease, but must be similar to a BBB type of musical). Thanks! :)

And awesome! Ursula is a fantabulous role. Hm, I’d suggest “I Enjoy Being a Girl” from Flower Drum Song! It’s more of a mezzo-soprano song in the sense that it doesn’t have high notes, but it’s in an easy range for you to do! The musical was made in the 50s and was a huge hit on both Broadway and made into a major movie. The music has the same style and type of tempo as the popular songs in Bye Bye Birdie. Plus, the sheet music is very easy to find!

Well, I’d just say to try and stay confident. When I’m confident in an audition I do 100000000x better than when i’m nervous. (which is usually why my monologues are soooo much better than my singing auditions! I psych myself out!) I know that’s a hard thing to do, because you’re kinda scaring yourself even more by telling yourself to stop being worried.

I suggest trying to be the first one to audition. You get it out of the way and you simply do not have TIME to be nervous! That always is easier for me, anyway. You also don’t have the opportunity to judge yourself by everyone else before you perform.

And practice, practice, practice. You’ll be fine :)

What's set strike?

Set Strike is either the day after the show or right after the show where all actors are required to stay and help “strike the set” or tear apart the set pieces, putting away the costumes, cleaning the theater, etc. Depending on your cast, this can be something that takes 1 hour for big casts to maybe 4 hours if you have a small cast. It’s always somewhat saddening to see all the sets and hard work being torn down, which is why in a few problems posted here they talk about the “emotions that come with it”.
